Louisiana - 1750-1800

France ceded Louisiana to Spain in 1760, although it held on to New Orleans and a few surrounding parishes. The first group of 200 Acadians arrived in 1765.

In 1762, France ceded the the east side of the Mississippi to Spain and its territories in Canada to Great Britain prompting the Acadian people to move south to the French controlled area of New Orleans. However, in 1766 the Don Antonio de Ulloa arrived in New Orleans and enforced Spanish rule.

During the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), French settlers fought against the British, alongside the Louisiana militia in the Battle of Baton Rouge.

Creole and German settlers in the Rebellion of 1768 forced the new Spanish governor to flee.

The Great Fire of 1788 destroyed the greater part of the city of New Orleans but with only one fatality. St Louis Cathedral was rebuilt a year later.

The cotton industry was born in 1793, when 27 year old Eli Whitney invented the first cotton gin.

In 1800 Spain ceded the territory back to France, under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte.
